Gonzales, Louisiana

In the 1700s, French and Spanish immigrants settled a small municipality here among the Houma Native Americans. By 1851, the small European settlement still only had ten residents. Within four decades, the population grew, a school had been established, and Big José Gonzáles had been elected Sheriff. His son, Joe “Tee-Joe,” short for “Petit Joe,” opened the Gonzales Post Office and a general store. Eventually, the Louisiana Railway and Navigation Company built a railway through the area, and a law passed by State Legislature required railroad companies to name their stations after the local post offices, solidifying the area’s name. It was laid out, subdivided, and Tee-Joe became the first mayor in 1906.

The area was incorporated as a village in 1922 and continued to grow while transportation to the area improved with the construction of the Airline Highway. Incorporation as a town came in 1952, and the first Jambalaya Festival was held in 1968. Governor John McKeithen marked the occasion by giving the town its “Jambalaya Capital of the World” nickname. During the ’50s, many industrial plants moved to the area along the Mississippi River, bringing hundreds of new residents to the still-tiny town. The City of Gonzalez was established in 1977 and today it is the most heavily populated city in the parish and a major industrial, commercial, and financial center.

The “Tee-Joe” Gonzalez Museum on Main Street features pictures, clothing, furniture, and pieces of history with a focus on the life and hardships of the municipalities’ early residents. For more classic architecture, there is still a smattering of Antebellum-period plantation-style homes along the Mississippi. If you’re in Gonzales the place is a shopper’s paradise. The local Tanger Factory Mall has over 100 stores. Whether you prefer the comfort of Skechers, Nike, or Old Navy, or higher-end designer wear found in Coach, Charlotte Russe, Ann Taylor, or Polo, you’re sure to find a stylish new fit. If designer gear isn’t your thing, however, and you feel more comfortable in jeans, boots, and maybe some mud, the nearby 165,000 square foot Cabela’s, is like Disney for hunters and fisherman.

If your little one has energy to burn, Lil Bambinos Playtorium is the place to be. There are many activities to keep them busy and teach them at the same time. Jambalaya Park is the perfect place to beat the heat. The pool has a splash zone and plenty of toys for kids, a picnic area, and vibrant garden that come together for an amazing way to spend the day with family and friends. Premier Lanes Entertainment Center has bowling, bumper cars, a video arcade and more.
